Bimeda is pleased to announce the launch of Halofusol 0.5 mg/ml oral solution for calves to the Irish market.
Containing, halofuginone 0.50 mg (equivalent to 0.6086 mg of halofuginone lactate), Halofusol is indicated in new born calves for the prevention of diarrhoea due to diagnosed Cryptosporidium parvum in farms with history of cryptosporidiosis and for the reduction of diarrhoea due to diagnosed Cryptosporidium parvum. Where used preventatively, administration should commence in the first 24 to 48 hours of life. For the reduction of diarrhoea, administration should start within 24 hours after the onset of diarrhoea.Bimeda's European technical veterinarian, Dr Renée Lodder BVSC, BCom, RCVS commented that 'Cryptosporidium parvum is a highly infectious and difficult to eradicate protozoan parasite, which causes diarrhoea in young calves between 1 and 4 weeks of age and most commonly occurring 7 to 13 days after birth. Transmission is via the faecal-oral route. No vaccine exists currently and preventative measures are highly important, including but not limited to ensuring strict hygiene with feeding equipment, isolating sick calves, housing new born calves individually or in small groups and ensuring good quality colostrum within the first two hours after birth. The cause of diarrhoea cannot be determined through observation, therefore, a faecal sample test is required to identify Cryptosporidium parvum. Affected calves should be isolated, receive oral fluids between feeding times (or IV fluids if anorexic) and be provided with a – Halofuginone lactate treatment such as Bimeda's Halofusol'.
Halofusol will be available in a 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre pack size and is a POM category medicine. It is administered orally after feeding colostrum, milk or milk replacer. Where the calf is not drinking, Halofusol can be mixed in half a litre of electrolyte solution and tube-fed. The product is administered once a day, for 7 days, using a metered 4ml pump.
Bimeda's General Manager for Ireland, Andrew Glynn, commented, 'we are very pleased to announce the launch of Halofusol to the Irish market today. The product complements our existing POM calf scour range, which includes Bimastat Oral Suspension (containing 150mg/ml sulfadiazine, 25mg/ml neomycin and 10.5% kaolin), for the treatment of scour in pre-ruminant calves with infections caused by organisms known or suspected of being susceptible to the combination of sulfadiazine and neomycin, and Recocam Solution For Injection (containing meloxicam 10mg/ml and ethanol 150mg/ml), which is licensed for use in diarrhoea in combination with oral rehydration therapy to reduce clinical signs in calves over one week of age and young, non-lactating cattle.
Bimeda has a broad portfolio of products to support new born calf health, including a range of nutritional products, such as Boviferm Plus rehydration sachets for scouring calves, Biocolost-B ready-to-use immunoglobulin supplement, Octavo syringes, which deliver energy, vitamins and minerals to calves and which can be used from birth.
